Rev Dr Giles Fraser, St Mary's Newington

I known what you’re all thinking: just how Christian is New Year’s Day?

New Year’s Day used to be in March, because that’s very Christian. Then the Pope moved it to January, which is not very Christian, even though he is sort of Christian. Pope fans moved with him, but proper Christians didn’t, although eventually we did. Except the tax man, who remains very Christian.

Christians continue to exist on 1st January however, and various Christians do various Christian things on that day, even though it’s not very Christian.

Black Christians particularly celebrate this. They’re very musical people, aren’t they.

And that is what Christianity is about today, in the Big News today from a Faith Perspective
