Akhandadhi Das, a Vaishnav Hindu teacher and theologian

Ukraine has lowered its conscription age to 25. Which brings me to the Hindu scriptures. They’re SO relevant that I’ll spend the bulk of the next three minutes talking about how relevant they are.

  1. There are a whole host of international laws and conventions that are supposed to cover what goes on in war. Most countries in the world have signed up to them, even if they ignore some of them from time to time.

I’m pretty sure that India is one such country. Given how rabidly religious the Indian Government has become, we must assume that they are satisfied that the international laws of war are compatible with their Hindu beliefs. This would seem to make Das’s ramblings about what the Bhagavad Gita says about war either superfluous or irrelevant, especially to Ukrainian conscripts Take your pick.

  2. War in Hinduism

As with all human societies, Hindus aren’t allowed to kill unless it is in a war to protect their own land or their religious group. Then it’s justified. The tricky bit is deciding when, where and then if that war is justified. This is always where the rules fall down. So no different to anyone of any religion or if no religion then.

I’m sure a well read Hindu would easily be able to show me some scripture or other that they think proves to me that their religion (and people who believe in that religion) is much better at justifying war or peace than I would be. But no religion has the best ideas and a worldwide convention is much better than a hodge podge of rules tempered by religious fervour.
