John Studzinski, Catholic

And in the Big News today from a Faith Perspective, war. It’s terrible. There are always wars. Peace requires diplomacy, restraint, empathy. A different kind of strength.

The world does not lack wisdom. It’s just that there is way, way, way more stupidity.

Absolutely this. My mind is really boggled by the genius that goes into tech like my phone, my sports watch and my digital piano. But at the opposite end of the spectrum is such unbelievable stupidity too. I find this website an endless source of amusement as well as an excellent window into aspects of the human condition.

  2. The dictionary definition of ‘wisdom’ is along the lines of ‘the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement’. The last bit in particular is indeed in pretty short supply just at the moment.

Of course, when Christians talk about wisdom, they have in mind a special kind of wiseness, the sort that only they possess, because only they talk to Jesus and think he’s talking back to them. But if you’re going to bring up the names of wise Christians, one of the worst to start with would be Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, aka Mother Teresa. Singling her out as an example of Christian wisdom undermined pretty well everything else that Mr Studzinski had to say.

    1. 100% spot on.

Christopher Hitchens, amongst others, exposed her for the nasty, hypocritical fraud that she was many years ago.

  3. Ah, Ecclesiastes, there’s a time for everything. But maybe it needs updating if it still includes “A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together.” I do that at my allotment but I can’t see it being of much interest to the non-gardener. Can anybody add any others to these:

A time for diplomacy to sort out conflict resolution, a time for dropping bombs to sort out conflict resolution.

A time to turn off social media, a time to turn on social media

A time to make coffee, a time to not make coffee

A time to cast away all doubts, a time to doubt

A time to tell little white lies, a time to be brutally honest

A time to read the Telegraph, a time to read the Guardian

A time to chant messages of hope, a time to chant messages of hate

A time to invest, a time to divest

A time to speak freely, a time to close down debate

A time to be woke, a time to be gammon

A time to be vegan, a time to eat meat

A time to be platitudinous, a time to be creative

    A time to be atheist.

  4. I believe that it is Ecclesiastes Chapter 9 that has the passage about making the best of your life because it’s the only one you get. That when you’re dead you’re dead, ergo there is no Heaven.
