For reasons I don’t quite understand this seems to be significantly under-reported in the media. The Labour government is proposing to resurrect Conservative plans, that it opposed only a few months ago, to spy on everyone’s, yes _everyone’s_, bank accounts. They will use algorithms that are not public or transparent to trawl through all bank and building society accounts, trying to highlight benefit fraud, even if you’ve never claimed benefits in your life. The DWP will then have the power to automatically remove money from your bank account.

Yet the return that they expect for this gargantuan, Orwellian sledgehammer, is the recovery of a mere 3% of benefit fraud.
