Boulby Underground Laboratory

Just saw a brief section on the Boulby Underground Laboratory in Yorkshire on this month’s Sky at Night. The lab is a world leader in the search for dark matter particles.

The clip included an interview with a remarkable woman called Emma Meehan. Emma joined the lab 15 years ago as a part time cleaner. At meal times she talked to the physicists, became fascinated by their work, enrolled at the Open University, and is now their senior lab technician.

Amazing what’s possible when you have the drive and put in the work. I doubt if Emma will ever read this, but you have my unbounded admiration.

Meanwhile, still waiting for T Coronae Borealis to go bang.

Sorry about the star trails. I must put in some effort to taking some better pictures of this.
