Amazingly Reverend Doctor Lord David Walker, Bishop of Manchester

Christians invented Trade Unions and so, via them, the Labour Party. It was because Jesus taught working people, like me, as well as ordinary people, like you, to organise, that the whole thing got started. Jesus, the Temporarily Visible Third of the Invisible Magic Friend, invented the Apostolic Succession, which gave me the power to come on the radio and tell you all this.

Over the years, we Christians have patiently explained to ignorant rabble, such as yourselves, about all the good and wonderful things that have come your way because of we Christians. Freedom of Religious Belief was one of them, although not necessarily freedom of any old belief, just religious ones. We also invented feeding the poor, housing the homeless, education, environmentalism, challenging the powerful and the wealthy (excluding us), votes for women, votes for everyone, the abolition of slavery, rights for gays, food, sunshine and happiness.

Your welcome.

  1. Of course Christians took the lead in opposing slavery, creating trades unions, and feeding the poor. It was scarcely possible to do anything in society a couple of hundred years ago unless you were a Christian. Non-Christians were vilified and ostracised by polite society; indeed, people were still liable to be imprisoned for denying the divinity of Jesus until well into the 19th century.

As opposed to individual Christians, however, the churches, particularly the CofE and the RCC, were a different matter entirely. They set their faces against virtually every societal advance of the 19th and 20th centuries, and in many respects they still haven’t caught up, especially in their attitudes towards women and gays. It is secularists who have made the running on all the issues that David Walker mentioned, and it is secularists who will end up having to deal with the many issues that he didn’t mention.

  2. To say that Jesus came to organise a church is really not backed up by the gospels. Indeed, Matthew 24: 33-34 explicitly tells us that this world will end during that current generation. This is a (very) long con.
