Mona’s right, of course; but unfortunately (and not unsurprisingly), piety is no guarantee of propriety. The disgraced MP for Wakefield, Imrad Ahmad Khan, is (I understand) a practising Muslim, as is, for instance, Lutfur Rahman, who ran Tower Hamlets as virtually a personal fiefdom until he was disqualified. I have lost count of the number of corrupt, depraved or actually criminal Tories who have claimed to be committed Christians.
We certainly need much higher standards in public life, and appropriate sanctions for those who violate them. A sense of right and wrong, and a sense of shame might help as well. But those standards have to be set in reference to universally shared ethical principles. Which pretty well rules out any (and all) particular religious beliefs.
Oh, how I agree with that sentiment.
