Rev Dr Rob Marshall, Priest at St John the Evangelist, Welwyn Garden City

We need to do more than offer ThoughtsAndPrayers for the people of Ukraine. ThoughtsAndPrayers are all very well but, as we all know, the Invisible Magic Friend doesn’t pay any attention to them. 1. The Rev Dr Peter has it right. The best that Rob Marshall seems to be able to do is to quote a ‘prophet’ of about 800BCE, moaning about what was not, actually, a ‘huge conflict’ but not much more than a few skirmishes involving the tinpot tribes gathered together in the village of Jerusalem.

Still, Rob did admit that ‘thoughts and prayers’ are pretty useless except as consolation; and even asked what ‘faith communities’ could do to help in the current crisis. (That too makes a change: they usually have all the answers). They could try ringing Patriarch Kirill up and asking him to intervene with that devout Christian, Vladimir Putin. If that doesn’t work, perhaps they could just shut up for a bit. That would at least be a relief.
