Tom McLeish, Physicist, Professor of Natural Philosophy, University of York, and oh yes, Anglican Lay Preacher

Has anyone mentioned lately that we are powerless? Good job I’m here then. There’s lots we can do. We can pray. This is all clearly explained by Isaiah and by the godlet that he so accurately prophesied

Oh yes, and look after the environment and don’t go to war.

  1. Tom McLeish is right: as individuals, human beings often are powerless. That is why we have bonded together in tribal groups since before the dawn of history, and why we have subsequently invented social institutions, governments, and supra-governmental organisations. They may not work very efficiently, or all the time, but they’re better than nothing, and a lot better than praying to a IMF that does nothing but sit silently on its hands.

Finally, ‘pathetic fallacy’ may be a technical literary term
(https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathetic_fallacy), but it also seems an appropriate means of describing religion in general, and Christianity in particular.
