Rev Dr Dr Prof David Wilkinson, Principal of St John’s College Durham

Russia looks ready to invade Ukraine. There’s only one thing to do, pray. The Russians will be praying too, so we’ve really got to outpray them on this one.

The word “prayer” is in the Book of Common Prayer, which allows me to divert into the fascinating History of Henry VIII and Edward VI, which we can quote at length at the invading Russians.

  1. The exploitation of the actual or potential deaths of thousands of people in order to make a trivial theological point is always tasteless, particularly when it’s delivered in a tone of mild regret, as employed by David Wilkinson this morning.

“Give peace in our time, O Lord”: from the CofE’s Evening Prayers, uttered at least once a week in most churches, and every day in some. A strong contender for the most ineffectual prayer in the litany. Followed by:

“Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God”. Not only ineffectual, but demonstrably false: one of the slogans that has served to keep the downtrodden quiet for centuries.

Who does Wilkinson think he’s kidding?

    1. Spot on, StephenJP.

Wilkinson seems to put literally every single observation he makes through a bizarre, blinkered, tone-deaf filter of his particular fluffy theism and seems utterly oblivious to how crass the resulting musings often sound.
