  1. That some first century CE bloke (who may or may not actually have lived) displayed empathy seems the thinnest of thin excuses for building the vast, vile religious institutions we know as the Christian Church. The wealth and power of these undemocratic and corrupt organisations have for centuries allowed them to issue strictures in the name of their IMF that have condemned generations to lives of misery. The RCC showed very little empathy to the families it impoverished by banning birth control, and then took money off them on a regular basis to pay for the priest who kept telling them how sinful they were.

  2. Empathetic Jesus, eh?

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”

“And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.”

“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”

There’s plenty more examples. Funnily enough, it’s always the nice cuddly Jesus we hear about in sermons, homilies and TftD. We don’t hear so much about his unpleasant vindictive side. Perhaps it’s just as well he probably never existed, then.
