Right Awful Anne Atkins – Agonising Aunt and Vicar’s Wife

Murpurgo, Hardy, Du Maurier, Ovid, biblical places beginning with the letter B, Shakespeare. Just some of the proper nouns in the AAA big book of brainy brain stuff.

  1. PLACE – perfectly defined in ‘The Last Goon Show of All.’

    Scene – A coal cellar
Seagoon (to Eccles) : What are you doing down here?

Eccles : Everybody gotta be somewhere!

There’s more philosophy in this exchange than in all of AAA’s breathless, incontinent, bourgeois outpourings.

  2. Can we do TIME according to Goons?
Bluebottle What time is it Eccles?
Eccles Err, just a minute. I, I’ve got it written down ‘ere on a piece of paper. A nice man wrote the time down for me this morning.
Bluebottle Ooooh, then why do you carry it around with you Eccles?
Eccles Well, umm, if a anybody asks me the ti-ime, I ca-can show it to dem.
Bluebottle Wait a minute Eccles, my good man…
    Eccles What is it fellow?
Bluebottle It’s writted on this bit of paper, what is eight o’clock, is writted.
Eccles I know that my good fellow. That’s right, um, when I asked the fella to write it down, it was eight o’clock.
Bluebottle Well then. Supposing when somebody asks you the time, it isn’t eight o’clock?
Eccles Ah, den I don’t show it to dem.
    Bluebottle Ooohhh…
    Eccles [Smacks lips] Yeah.
Bluebottle Well how do you know when it’s eight o’clock?
Eccles I’ve got it written down on a piece of paper!

  3. The ‘faith-based perspective’ this morning seemed to consist of AAA waxing lyrical about all the places where the BBoMS says something happened (for most of which there is no evidence). Then she informed us that she doesn’t need to go to all these exotic places anyway, and is going to North Norfolk, where her family has spent its holidays for the past 200 years.

And anyone who quotes the start of Psalm 137 on TftD (“By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept”) needs reminding how it ends: “O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones”.

Revenge and retribution: the hallmark of the IMF and its followers down the ages.
