  1. What, really, was the faith-based perspective here? That we shouldn’t be afraid of the IMF’s Holy Virus, because Jesus told us not to be afraid? But the Gospels are quite prepared to tell their audience to be afraid when it suits them to do so. Wilkinson dragged in the Sermon on the Mount, as if it was a clincher. This text is a late mish-mash of bits of traditional Jewish wisdom, which doesn’t hang together as a coherent world-view: its main message seems to be “don’t despair; no matter how bad this life is, the next one will be better”. Thanks for that.

    And if the final quotation from Corinthians has any relevance at all, it is that to get through the pandemic we need faith, hope and love. If by ‘faith’ Wilkinson meant ‘trust in science and modern medicine’, that might be OK. But of course he doesn’t.
