And in the Big News today from a Faith Perspective, happy Guru Nanak birthday! Before his birth there was racism, war, hatred and inter-religious rivalry. But since then…

  1. “There is a long and inglorious history of Sikhs being persecuted, hated and oppressed, indeed this is prevalent and ongoing today, by….They Who Must Not Be Named”.

    1. Great Uncle Indarjit Singh liked to remind us, before he fell out with the BBC, that Sikhism included all the best best bits from They Who Must Not Be Named, and Another One Who Must Not Be Named now that a certain nationalist party has taken control in India. He usually concluded that the best way to deal with inter-religious sectarianism was to create another religion.

to be fair, the secular world has this as well…

        Rather like https://xkcd.com/927/

Back on topic, I think religions LIKE to feel persecuted – it helps reinforce identity, preserve an “us and them” attitude and allows the blame for anything wrong to be attributed to “the others”; this is even baked into their core beliefs – you have an IMF and an IM “Baddy”.

Not unlike politicians in that respect.

  2. Meanwhile, some Sikhs are doing their bit for inter-faith cohesion by demanding to be recognised as a separate ethnic group in the 2021 census: see for instance https://inews.co.uk/news/uk/sikhs-ethnic-group-2021-uk-census-debate-government-389259 (in which Great-Uncle Indarjit, to do him credit, comes out strongly against the proposal).

And, given that Jasvir Singh only ever talks about Sikhism in his regular TftD slots, he should really drop the ‘Faiths Forum 4 London’ bit of his job description. Especially the hugely irritating ‘4’.
