Jasvir Singh, Chair of the City Sikhs Network, Co-chair of Faiths Forum 4 London

There’s nothing wrong with being an organ donor. Once you’re finished with your body, you are ready to be reincarnated in the next one. This means you can prevent someone from being immediately reincarnated by giving them some bits of your old body.

  1. We’ve had this before from a Sikh speaker, possibly this one:

Sikhs acting in approved ways= Sikh teaching ,

Sikhs not acting in approved ways= the culture of the region.

  2. Spot on, AndyM.

Yet another revisionist, post hoc revelation that (insert religion here) had a genuinely progressive stance on an important contemporary issue all along.

The likes of Jasvir must think folk are stupid.

  3. Opening line….
    “I recently read a touching story…”

This is all too common a gambit from TFTDers, basing their ‘thought’ on something they themselves have selected from an historical Anniversary, a recently (or not so recently) published report, or marginal story from the weekend papers. This doesn’t seem to me quite to fulfill the brief of a ‘religious perspective on a person or story in the news.’ In this instance Singh has – as ably exposed above – taken a comfy revisionist stance on a subject not currently sparking debate (it might when legislation comes into force next year), and thereby giving faith – and his faith in particular – a gratuitous ‘leg-up.’

Three (tedious) minutes of prime air time wasted.

  4. I wondered what his target audience was. Most listeners will already have made up their minds about organ donation, and couldn’t really care either way what Sikhs think about it. Perhaps his comments were aimed at delegates to the forthcoming Sikh-based conference he mentioned. Perhaps he’s planning to get up and say ” As I pointed out on TftD recently…”

  5. If someone can use TFTD to talk about reincarnation as if it’s ‘real’, why doesn’t TFTD allow a Scientologist to speak about their wacky nonsense? If the answer from the Beeb is something like “don’t be silly – Scientology is obviously too mad to be taken seriously”, I rest my case.

    1. I think scientology would be too silly even for TFTD. We have to stick to sensible things, like an infallible pope telling us that you can only perform transubstantiation if you have the correct genital configuration. Isn’t the pope just fantastic?
